Unique Characteristics
Glassware as artwork
We have been creating painting and sculpture series as well as making glassware. By overlapping fine art and craftwork, we are pursuing an unique expression and style of glassware. We have also established a new approach to glass casting with Glow Glass, and our new painting series “night fly” was created using the technique. The pieces of glass on the acrylic board show gradation of transparency, but they glow in the dark.
One-of-a-kind glassware
All of the works are hand-made, so they might show slight differences in color or shape since we make molds from plaster for each work. They have unique figures as the color patterns are sometimes accidentally created by the temperature and gravity. All the work is done individually by hand, making them unique pieces.
The historical casting technique “Pâte de verre”
This technique has been used since the 15th century BCE in both Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Pâte de verre involves making a shape from wax, then covering it with plaster. This is then heated, melting the wax away and creating a plaster mold. After this, the plaster mold is filled with glass grains before being heated in a kiln, melting the glass into the original wax shape. After a long cooling period, the mold is removed from the kiln. It is broken open and the glass pieces inside are carefully polished one by one.
